Choosing a professional 3D scanner: accuracy, metrology, reverse engineering and software

A 3D scanner should not be chosen only by a millimetre accuracy number. The right choice depends on the object, part size, surface condition, detail level, post-scan software and final result: 3D printing, quality inspection, reverse engineering, dental work, design or archiving.

Key point: accuracy, resolution and volumetric accuracy are different. Accuracy describes dimensional trust, resolution describes captured detail, and volumetric accuracy becomes important on larger objects.

1. Start from the real application

3D printing and creation

Focus on ease of use, clean mesh output, colour when useful and budget.

Design and reverse engineering

Focus on usable geometry, stable alignment and CAD reconstruction software.

Metrology and inspection

Focus on repeatability, laser modes, traceability and inspection reports.

2. Understand scanning technologies

Technology	Best for	Watch points
Structured light	Detailed objects, education, design, fixed workstation and turntable workflows.	Black, transparent or shiny surfaces may need preparation.
Blue laser	Mechanical parts, difficult surfaces, metrology, inspection and reverse engineering.	Markers may be required for stable alignment and global accuracy.
Infrared / VCSEL	People, medium/large objects, fast capture and mobile scanning.	Fine detail may be lower than laser or fixed workstation modes.
Photogrammetry	Large parts, bodywork, assemblies and global dimensions.	Image protocol, markers and environment must be controlled.

3. Scanner, software and workflow

The scanner captures geometry, but the useful result comes from the workflow. For 3D printing, a clean STL mesh may be enough. To modify a part, reverse-engineering software is often needed. For production inspection, the scan must be compared to CAD and reported.
