FDM material guide: Nylon / Polyamide

Nylon / Polyamide filament: wear resistance, fatigue and mechanical parts

Nylon, or polyamide, is selected for FDM parts that need to handle friction, repeated flexing, fatigue and impact. It is a hygroscopic engineering material: it must be stored and printed dry to keep extrusion stable and mechanical properties reliable.

Why choose nylon?

Very good toughness, abrasion resistance and useful behavior for parts exposed to friction or fatigue.

What to watch

Moisture strongly affects printing: drying, sealed storage and stable settings are essential.

PA, PA-CF or PA-GF?

Carbon- or glass-filled grades increase stiffness and dimensional stability, with a suitable nozzle.

  • Gears and slidesParts with friction, guiding or relative movement.
  • Hinges and clipsFlexible elements or parts exposed to repeated bending.
  • Industrial toolingJigs, soft jaws, spacers and production aids.
  • Wear partsPads, guides, bushings and replaceable components.
  • Mechanical prototypesShape and behavior validation under load.
  • Light roboticsBrackets, transmissions and impact-resistant components.

Material advice : dry nylon before printing and protect the spool during use. For more stiffness, compare PA-CF/PA-GF; for higher thermal capability, compare PC or PEEK depending on printer capability.
