PLA and PLA+ filament for 3D printing: accuracy, surface quality and reliable prototyping
PLA, or polylactic acid, is the reference FDM thermoplastic for producing clean, stable and detailed parts quickly. Its low shrinkage, good stiffness and easy printability make it a strong choice for validating a shape, building a model, presenting a design or producing light-duty jigs. PLA+ builds on this base with formulations that are often tougher or more tolerant depending on the brand.
Why choose PLA?
Excellent printability, low warping, clean visual finish and a wide color range for consistent everyday printing.
What to watch
PLA is less suitable for parts exposed to heat, severe mechanical stress or some chemical environments.
PLA or PLA+?
Standard PLA favors simplicity and surface finish. PLA+ often aims for better impact resistance or improved robustness in light-duty use.
Visual prototypesShape, volume, ergonomics and client presentation validation.
Architecture and modelsDetailed models, clean parts, fine geometries and color rendering.
Education and FabLabsAccessible material for learning, testing and producing quickly.
Decorative objectsFigures, signage, light supports and design objects.
Simple jigsAssembly aids, references, gauges and light tooling away from heat.
Product communicationLooks-like prototypes, packaging mockups and demonstration parts.
Material advice: choose PLA for accuracy, appearance and ease of use. For parts used outdoors, near heat or under repeated impact, compare with PETG, ASA, ABS, PC or nylon according to the final application.
